We left our hostel and headed for Glace Bay and the miners museum. We toured the exhibits and then had a mine tour. It was very interesting -- the actual mine was tunneled a few km out towards the ocean, but below it. The height of the tunnel went down to 4' 2" in places.
Before we went down the tunnel we had to put on capes and helmets and our tour guide, a retired miner, advised us to take walking sticks -- to help bending over when walking. Deon didn't think he needed one but he soon found he should have got one. Shirley gave him hers. Just picture us a group of 20 (Nathan and one other boy, the rest adults) walking down this tunnel hunched over like old people. It was cold and damp and the tunnels were lit for us but not for the miners years ago. It was a hard life for them. If you ever have a chance to visit this area, definitely do the mine tour!!
We then took the Cabot Trail to Pleasant Bay. Slow, winding, and VERY STEEP mountain roads, and unfortunately lots of rain and mist so didn't get to see much of the beautiful scenery.
It brought us all the way across the northern part of Cape Breton. We found our hostel in Pleasant Bay, a cute little place with one other couple there, a couple from Holland who are very friendly.
Somehow during the day today, our MobiCooler got switched to 'hot' in the van, so everything that was supposed be kept cold got heated up. We ended up having to throw out a lot of our food!!! The Dutch couple that is staying here felt sorry for us and gave us one of their cucumbers!

Hi everyone, Looks like your having a good time despite the dreary weather. We're glad you enjoyed the mine tour as much as we did. We hope this message reaches you. We have had some trouble with this. Enjoy your touring, and may God continue to keep you safe. Aunt Barb and Uncle Bernie

ReplyDeleteWell I sure hope you enjoyed your cucumber! Funny about Deon and the walking stick. Nathan must have felt lucky to be short.
