It really is red sand….

Tuesday morning, we left our B & B after a delicious breakfast, and headed for the unforgettable island of PEI. The Confederation Bridge was our first highlight….it was our passage onto the island, and even though the 13 km bridge was a little intimidating, it was also very impressive!!! Even from the other side of the bridge, we could see the very red soil of the island. Stunning!

We decided to look for a cottage near water for an affordable price….after an hour of looking, we found the perfect little cottage, and it was very close to the ocean, for only $40 a night! Our cheapest accommodations by far! A bargain we couldn’t resist – 2 bedrooms, full kitchen, sitting area, bathroom, patio and barbeque. We were happy to have our own space for a couple nights! We were the only ones at the whole cottage…or so we thought. Soon after unpacking we noticed something watching us from the front of our deck area. It was a red FOX. He kept hanging around and the owners said he’s a regular visitor at the cottages.

We spent the rest of the day hanging out at the ocean beach in the red sand! It was a cool & windy day, but that didn’t stop us. The boys had a blast exploring the sand (so did I) and running through the sand dunes.
Today (Wednesday, June 10), we did a lot of sight seeing! The nice thing is that everything is a lot closer together than what we are used to!!! On the map it looks like spots are hours from each other, but they end up only being 15 – 20 minutes from eachother. It really is a small island. We realized one thing real fast….the locals here charge for every sight seeing spot there is!

Thankfully, the provincial parks are free, so Nathan started the day by fishing off the wharf, and working on his collection – he found 2 star fish on the wharf. That was a huge thrill for him, and he couldn’t wait to go back to the cottage to show Deon. It was also neat watching the fishermen come in & go out on their huge boats.

Mom & I really wanted to see the Anne of Green Gables area. Of course, Nathan & Deon weren’t in the least bit interested and stayed in the vehicle for that whole thing. It was cool reliving the setting of the books to the area that Lucy Maud Montgomery grew up in.
We then went to:
- Touch Aquarium($16) – very disappointing – small & messy
- Potato Museum ($14) – okay, but also disappointing. Learned that potatoes originated in South America, not Europe as we all thought. We also learned that there is POTATO VODKA produced!! The Yukon Gold originated in Ontario & is only about 20 years old...I thought it had been around forever.
- West Point Lighthouse ($6) – the highlight of our day. Really cool. You got to climb up to the top of the lighthouse on the steepest & narrowest stairs you can imagine. As you can tell by the photo, Mom was a little freaked! Once at the top, the view was stunning!!

- Glass Bottle Houses ($16) - we decided we’d spent enough on disappointing museums, so we didn’t pay to enter this one (it was also 6:15 p.m. and the sign indicated they were closed). So, I peeked my head around the back & the owner came out and gave me a lecture, telling me ‘that’s how she makes her living’. We purchased a couple postcards and quickly left that sight.

Deon bought us all lunch today, where Mom & I tried a common menu item here – Fries With The Works: French fries with diced beef, peas, and gravy on the fries. Pretty yummy! We didn’t get back to our cottage until 7:30 p.m.

I still wanted a bag of red sand…Deon drove me to the beach to fill my bag. We came back for dinner and ate @ 8:30 p.m.!!!! It was a full day. Nathan was sooo tuckered out & went to bed right after dinner.

  1. I can't believe mom climbed up there. Good for you mom. I love the pictures and the stories I almost feel like I am there with you. Can't wait to see your album.
