Yesterday we spent a beautiful, and informational, day in Old Quebec City.
We decided that, before walking through everything, that we should take a horse & buggy tour just to get some of the history from the driver ($80 for 45 minutes -- well worth the money). That was a great experience for all 4 of us. A HUGE history lesson. Who knew that the wall was surrounding Old Quebec was over 11 miles long, and 9 feet wide. That was something to see!!!! We walked along the top of that huge wall!!!
Or that the parliament building architecture was symbolic in soooo many ways (windows on level 1 were French designs, windows on level 3 were English designs, and windows on level 2 were a combination of both -- that's just one example).
The architecture there was stunning: so much character in all of the old buildings. It just made us feel like never leaving. We took the venicular down to the lower level of Old Quebec; and Deon, Nathan & I took the stairs back up (a workout in itself. Mom chose to ride the venicular in order to stay standing on her two feet.
Once we finished our tour, the boys & I pulled off our bikes and rode through the whole Plains of Abraham park. I didn't want to dig out our helmets from the car top carrier so we rode w/o them (I know....bad Mom). I got a little worried when we stopped by a couple Quebec City Police on the side of the road...I didn't know how I would explain myself in English, never mind French.
Language was a bit of a barrier, but generally we could find people who spoke English. A very enjoyable day overall.
All the hostels in Quebec City were booked, and inns & hotels were crazy expensive, so we found a hostel about 1/2 hour north of the city in the country for $80. We spent the night there, and debated what to do Sunday morning re: church.
We were told there are no English speaking churches in the area, so church seemed pointless (even all 4 of us put together isn't enough to understand a French service). We decided to do our own devotion time, and then carry on to New Brunswick where possibly we'd find a church there in the afternoon. When we arrived in Edmunston, New Brunswick we were told the area is 99% French speaking. Thus, we spent a nice relaxing afternoon together.
